Beginning in November 2009 the aquarium will be offering Mommy and Me programs for toddlers ages 1-4 years old. These programs will encompass a variety of learning techniques that allow for the development of motor skills, understanding of different sizes, shapes, weights, and movements among a variety of marine animals native to Georgia waterways and the ability to identify the difference between fish, crabs, turtles, and invertebrates. The programs will include hands-on experiences with different animals, arts and crafts, a story time, and a game.
These programs will take place every Tuesday from 8:30-9:15 through December 2009. In January of 2010 the program will be provided on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30-9:15. Topic: Water in the Earthquake Process
Subduction zones produce the largest and most damaging earthquakes on earth; these earthquakes can be accompanied by devastating tsunamis. The sediments that often host the earthquake faults began at the seafloor, with a consistency similar to pudding. Through subduction, these weak sediments evolve to be able to fail catastrophically during earthquakes. For this evolution to occur, fluid must be squeezed out and escape to the seafloor. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) research has provided the opportunity to examine how fluid pressures and fluid escape affect the generation of earthquakes. Most recently, NanTroSEIZE (the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment) has begun a multi-expedition program to examine the shallow portion of the subduction zone off of Japan. This region has a well-documented history of regular large earthquakes. Dr. Screaton will discuss results of previous work and implications for understanding subduction zone earthquakes. |
