|
|
Colleen Kannen
... is an Ohio native who studied Biology (with a marine science concentration) while attending Wittenberg University. Though her passion for marine science began at a young age, her collegiate academic experiences in The Bahamas, Panama, and at the Duke Marine Lab have made it quite clear the career path she desires to take. Prior to this internship, Colleen completed the AmeriCorps NCCC program where she was lucky enough to travel the country and work with various organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and US Forest Service. She is beyond thrilled to be a part of UGA MECA and is greatly looking forward to the challenges and rewards that come with teaching.

Kelley Purcell ..
Kelley Purcell attended LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. where she studied the biological sciences. She also lived in upstate New York my entire life. While in college, she organized an after school program at a local elementary school with her fellow Biology Honor Society
students, with a curriculum centered around environmental education and species conservation. “The program, called Young Biologists, was a huge success and was solely responsible for generating my interest in teaching, especially young children,” she said.

... grew up in San Antonio, Tex and lived there most of her life. She has been interested in marine life since the age of 8 and graduated in May with a degree in marine biology from Texas A&M University at Galveston. She worked for a short time in the Coastal Health lab, assisting with genetic studies on Escherichia coli. “I am very excited about this internship and I hope it will be a stepping stone in a career in science education,” she said. “This job encompasses numerous teaching
opportunities and I look forward to experiencing them here.” |
Katie White
Katie White is a native of Albany, one of New York’s suburbs, where she has lived all of her life until now. She graduated this past May from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she received a BS in natural resources and applied ecology. Her academic background has largely centered on freshwater fisheries research. Last summer, katie studied the Kansas River fish community through a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) internship at Kansas State University, and during her senior year published the study’s results in a journal called River Research and Applications. The previous summer, she assisted a graduate student studying yellow perch population dynamics in Oneida Lake at Cornell’s Biological Field Station in Bridgeport, New York. In addition to my research interests, Katie is an avid music aficionado and has played trumpet in various bands and orchestras for the last twelve years. She is very excited to try her hand at teaching through this incredible internship offered by MECA, and looks forward to learning more about the beautiful and fascinating Georgia coast!
